Objectives :

In conjuction to the primary productivity measurements in the MATER project and in continuation of the 'PP cruise' series of the CINCS project (EU-MASTII/MTPI), productivity measurements were made at the two standard CINCS 'PP' stations D2 (100m depth) and D4 (540m), with the addition of the CINCS deep station D7 (MATER station MSB-2) (1600m).

Description of the field observations :

1) Water samples were collected with Niskin water bottles from the 3 stations of transect D (D2,D4,D7) of the original CINCS study area and from water column depths: 1, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 75, 100, 120, 150, 200, 300, 400, 500, 700, 1000, 1200, 1500m (station D2: down to 100m, station D4: down to 500m). The samples were used for:
 a) analysis of NO3, NO2, NH4, PO4, SiO2, chlorophyll-a, phaeopigments, POC, PON,
 b) primary production estimates, with the 14C in situ technique (down to 100m depth, 2replicates and 1 blank per depth),
 c) new and regenerated production measurements by means of the 15N in situ technique at specific depth layers at stations D4 and
 d) phytoplankton analysis. Samples were collected only from the primary production depth layers (station D2, d4 & D7) and preserved in Lugol.
2) With the use of a SBE-25 CTD (equipped with an oxygen sensor and photometer) profiles of conductivity, temperature, pressure, oxygen and light attenuation were obtained from stations D2, D4 & D7.
3) Underwater light penetration was estimated with a Secchi disc at all 3 stations.
4) Surface irradiance was measured at all 3 stations with the use of a Bioblock Scientific LX 101 Luxmeter.
5) As part of the primary production experiments, 30 polycarbonate incubation bottles were deployed at the three stations at different depth layers, for a two hour in situ incubation. The depth layers are: 1, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 75, 100m for station D2 with the addition of 120m for stations D4 and D7.
6) In parallel with the 14C experiments new and regenerated production measurements were also performed by means of the 15N technique for a four hour in situ incubation at station D4. Polycarbonate bottles were deployed on a second mooring line at the following depth layers: 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 75, 100, 120m.
